Them Crooked Vultures- Them Crooked Vultures

While they have no other albums to compare, this is for sure a Top 15. Some of rock and roll’s greatest men put together one album that explodes with tenacity. From the heavy opening tracks of “No One Loves Me..”, “New Fang”, and “Mind Eraser” to the softer stylings of “Interludes With Ludes” this eponymous album is a majestic blend of QOTSA, Zeppelin, and Foo. Josh Homme shows off why he is one of the best rock lyricists today while Dave reminds us why he got the drumming gig for NIrvana all those years ago. We can only hope the sophomore album is on the horizon.

Favourite Worst Nightmare- Arctic Monkey

So originally, this would have been reserved for another Arctic Monkeys album “Suck It and See” but after about 58 listens through this album, it tops all other Arctic Monkeys albums. There is an element of their heavy punk side, yet filled with a sophistication that now shows on Suck It And See.

Notable songs: 505, Brianstorm, D is For Dangerous, Do Me a Favour….ah f*** it. The whole damn album!

For anyone in the Chicago area, I highly recommend an up and coming band. They go by the name “Nonpronto”; A jazz pop trio that is totally worth the hype. Frontman Dan Collins leads you along with his smooth vocals and fluttering piano melodies. It’s music for walking down Michigan Ave on a sunny day with your friends or sweetheart, or waiting for the “L” in a gentle rain. It’s nostalgic, yet modern. It’s simply beautiful music.

I think it’s pretty fair to say that Patrick Carney loves nothing more than to let loose some heat during media interviews. He’s notoriously known for ripping into fellow artists and other celebrities for being exactly who they are. Absolutely everything he says about his counterparts are true. Maybe it’s the fact that he’s SO correct, it’s actually the reason it lands him in (supposed) ‘deep water’.

This week he ripped into Justin Bieber for obvious reasons. But he did specify by saying that Bieber doesn’t deserve a Grammy award because he’s rich enough as it is. Taking a sentence like that too seriously obviously shows him as in the wrong because every artist deserves the right to be nominated &/or win any award in their field. But true fans of both Carney and The Black Keys know that this is totally out of the intended perspective. Carney is clearly referring to how much album sales attention is diverted an artists way when they win a Grammy award (the Music version of an Oscar). Bieber has enough money, winning a Grammy would boost his popularity and over-all album sales by 0.000001%.

Now the backlash he is facing from young kids with the music knowledge and experience of a deaf eskimo is just awful to read. To be fair, Carney deals with them ridiculously well and will forever hold his tongue in his cheek, but what really angers me are two specific tweets above. Calling Carney a one-hit wonder is like calling Bruce Springsteen an amateur showman. My God, in ten years Ross Garfield will slap himself silly for ever doubting one of the most diverse and hard-working drummers around. Carney is the rhythm machine of one of the greatest rock and roll bands of our generation.

Bieber fans, shut up, turn off Boyfriend, stop looking at Nicki Minaj’s tits, stick on any Black Keys album (Brothers, Magic Potion, Rubber Factory, El Camino, The Big Come Up etc.) and listen to it in it’s entirety (Yes that means beginning to end not one song over and over again) and start living a better life.

I’m in an Entrepreneurial Marketing class and we have to come with a business idea. Here’s my idea:

A lounge to listen to vinyl and retro forms of music (8 track, cassette, CDs). Basically part record store/part lounge where you can bring in your own stuff to listen to/part coffeehouse (any other food ideas?). Thoughts? Would you come?

Wasting Light- Foo Fighters

Show me anything by Dave Grohl, I will probably instantly love it. Wasting Light is one of my top Foo albums. I love the fact that they decided to go back to the raw analog recording style they used to do. There is a much more authentic sound to it all and really preserves the true essence of rock music. So much of this album reminds me of the first Foo Fighters album while still maintaining a new sound (Does White Limo not sound like Weenie Beenie?!). Bringing back the likes of Butch Vig and Krist Novoselic really made this album. There is too much stuff to put in one post about why this album is so good. It just is, because it’s Dave effing Grohl. My favorites/notables: Walk, These Days, I Should Have Known, Arlandria, and of course White Limo.

I need more music suggestions to listen to. Bands I like: Arctic Monkeys, Phoenix, Black Keys,...

Pressure & Time- Rival Sons

This album just recently jumped a bunch into my Top 15…like within the past week. This is the perfect album for those who rock. They take the best of classic rock sounds like Hendrix and Zeppelin and fuse them into something that sounds nostalgic, yet not cliché. Rather than shoving anvils of simple power chords down throats, it’s filled with crafty and structured melodies. Jay Buchanan’s vocals soar above Scott Holiday’s guitar harmonies and fit between Michael Miley’s heavy beats. Notables songs from this album are the lead track “All Over The Road”, the Zeppelin-esque title track “Pressure & Time”, and for those who get the bonus track on iTunes “Company Man” (my personal favorite). This album is a must listen for rockers everywhere!
