Top 15 Favorite Albums #11
Them Crooked Vultures- Them Crooked Vultures
While they have no other albums to compare, this is for sure a Top 15. Some of rock and roll’s greatest men put together one album that explodes with tenacity. From the heavy opening tracks of “No One Loves Me..”, “New Fang”, and “Mind Eraser” to the softer stylings of “Interludes With Ludes” this...

Favourite Worst Nightmare- Arctic Monkey
So originally, this would have been reserved for another Arctic Monkeys album “Suck It and See” but after about 58 listens through this album, it tops all other Arctic Monkeys albums. There is an element of their heavy punk side, yet filled with a sophistication that now shows on Suck It And See.
Notable songs: 505, Brianstorm, D is For...

Chicago Music- Nonpronto
For anyone in the Chicago area, I highly recommend an up and coming band. They go by the name “Nonpronto”; A jazz pop trio that is totally worth the hype. Frontman Dan Collins leads you along with his smooth vocals and fluttering piano melodies. It’s music for walking down Michigan Ave on a sunny day with your friends or sweetheart, or waiting for the “L” in a gentle...

I have a 45 of “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” and there are some weird messages etched on it. One says “The house is a mess” and the other side says “Mental or Automotive”. WHAT MESSAGES ARE YOU SENDING TO US JACK?!!?!

I need YOUR thoughts
I’m in an Entrepreneurial Marketing class and we have to come with a business idea. Here’s my idea:
A lounge to listen to vinyl and retro forms of music (8 track, cassette, CDs). Basically part record store/part lounge where you can bring in your own stuff to listen to/part coffeehouse (any other food ideas?). Thoughts? Would you come?

Wasting Light- Foo Fighters
Show me anything by Dave Grohl, I will probably instantly love it. Wasting Light is one of my top Foo albums. I love the fact that they decided to go back to the raw analog recording style they used to do. There is a much more authentic sound to it all and really preserves the true essence of rock music. So much of this album reminds me of the first Foo Fighters album...

Pressure & Time- Rival Sons
This album just recently jumped a bunch into my Top 15…like within the past week. This is the perfect album for those who rock. They take the best of classic rock sounds like Hendrix and Zeppelin and fuse them into something that sounds nostalgic, yet not cliché. Rather than shoving anvils of simple power chords down throats, it’s filled with crafty and...

Crash Kings- Crash Kings
Seemed right to post this on a Wednesday (die hard Crash King fans get the reference). First off, this a heck of a debut album. Breaking away from the conventional rock band formation around a guitar for melody, Crash Kings rocks your socks sans guitar. The band consisting of drums, bass, and piano/clavinet can bring you any song you desire on their self titled album....

My suggestion of the day: listen to the band Rival Sons. Specifically the album “Pressure & Time”, and even more specifically the song “Company Man”. You will not be disappointed.

Jour Music: Gary Clark Jr. - Blak & Blu (Album) →
jour-music:
Savior of the blues, Gary Clark Jr. just released his highly anticipated (by me at least) debut album, Blak & Blu. The album is just about everything I expected it to be. A wide mix of uptempo guitar driven tracks, with some more mellow almost Jazz numbers carried by his vocals. Gary Clark…

No one realizes how meticulously layered and carefully constructed Continuum was. Or how beautiful it sounds on vinyl.

Top 15 Favorite Albums- Honorable Mention
So Much For The Afterglow- Everclear
If you remember the 90s, you probably remember this band and this album. With the big hits like “Father of Mine”, “I Will Buy You A New Life”“, and “Everything to Everyone”, this album was the big one for Everclear. I love the drummer’s style for this album (specifically on Everything to Everyone and Like A...

A Shameless Promotion
Do you like The Black Keys, The White Stripes, Jimi Hendrix, or John Mayer? Perhaps you’re into post rock, indie rock? If you like any of these or are just genuinely curious, check out my band Searching For Seas. We play most anything in the realm of rock (excluding hard core rock, metal, screamo, punk, emo punk, etc). Best way to describe us is a jam band. Music for just chillin’. And...

Ball & Biscuit- The White Stripes
It was a cold, rainy April day when this song hit my eardrums. My brother had just bought Elephant on CD, and told me I HAD to listen to this song. I listened to it, and from then on, I wanted to be a guitar player. That was how I got started; THIS SONG. Now, for WHY I love this song. Jack’s almost cocky vocals set the tone for the entire song and he...

I have a new found love of vinyl. My current collection includes:
The Black Keys: Rubber Factory, Attack & Release, Brothers, El Camino
Jack White: Blunderbuss
Jimi Hendrix: Axis Bold as Love, Electric Ladyland
John Mayer: Continuum
and some orchestral arrangement of one of my favorite orchestra pieces, “Peter & The Wolf”
Next purchases: Born & Raised (John Mayer),...

Out of My Mind- John Mayer Trio
John Mayer is one of the few pop artists that has still kept blues alive. As he said in his “Where the Light Is- Live in LA” performance, “let me first say how wonderful it feels to know that it’s 2007 and we just launched into a slow blues and 7000 people in LA went nuts. All is not lost.” This song is one of the many that makes me...

Little Black Submarines- The Black Keys
If you’re a Black Keys fan and this song hasn’t jumped up to one of your top 10/5/3 fave Keys songs of all time, I question you. This song is probably the best song the Black Keys have ever produced. It’s not their old blues duo stuff, but it is an incredible song. It’s as if they took “Stairway to Heaven” and “Last...

When The Levee Breaks- Led Zeppelin
This is probably a random Led Zeppelin song to post, let alone be one of my favorites. There are 3 reasons I love this song and make it number 5 on my list.
1) The drums. John Bonham gave the drums an awesome heavy, slow groove.
2) The constant F chord. It’s meaty and just gives the song raw power
3) The harmonica. It adds a southern rock sound. I...

Everlong- Foo Fighters
The epitome of Foo Fighters came when this song was released. Who could forget this anthem? The song that has come to be one of the trademark alternative rock songs of the 90s (right up there with Smells Like Teen Spirit). It’s high on my list due to sentimental value but also because this song just rocks! Anyone who has been to a Foo Fighters concert (myself...

Vultures- John Mayer
A J.M. classic. This song is arranged so cool. I love the high guitar riff, John’s falsetto chorus, and the keys solo. It has a laid back groove with a just slight moody and spacey tone. I’ve found the best way to listen to this song is with noise cancelling headphones, and then gradually phase the into of the song into your ears. I love this song and everything...

Drive- Incubus
The “Make Yourself” album was my first experience in alternative rock music ever. I would steal my brother’s CD player, this CD and walk around at recess jamming to this. Drive is to Incubus as Stairway to Heaven is to Led Zeppelin. This is THE song that defined Incubus. The best part about this song is how they can fuse acoustic rock with DJ Killmore’s...
